La semana pasada, el acuario cilíndrico más grande del mundo ubicado en Berlín, reventó la madrugada del 16 de diciembre por motivos, todavía desconocidos. El llamado AquaDom se encuentra situado en el interior del céntrico hotel Radisson Collection de la ciudad alemana.
Este desastre ha significado el vertido de cerca de un millón de litros de agua salada y 1500 peces tropicales que se encontraban en su interior. Además, ha causado dos heridos leves debido a cortes por los cristales.
El acuario se encontraba en una de las zonas más visitadas de la ciudad, junto a la catedral de Berlín y la isla de los museos. Presentaba unas dimensiones de 16 metros de altura y 11.5 metros de diámetro dispuestas en forma cilíndrica y en el medio, contenía un ascensor transparente.
Al romperse la estructura y liberar el agua, se ha generado un torrente que ha perjudicado gran parte del mobiliario del hotel y otros comercios de la planta baja. El acuario contenía casi un centenar de especies tropicales distintas y muchos de ellos se han encontrado muertos en las calles o han acabado arrastrados hacia las alcantarillas. Cabe mencionar que la temperatura del interior del acuario se mantenía a unos 26 grados y Berlín, la madrugada del 16 de diciembre, registró temperaturas de nueve grados bajo cero.
Los bomberos, quienes se trasladaron de inmediato al lugar, confirmaron que algunos peces pudieron ser salvados, siendo trasladados a otros acuarios. En cuanto al hotel, hubo un apagón y los huéspedes fueron trasladados a otro hotel cercano. Según los informes del cuerpo de Bomberos, quien pudo entrar en el espacio a primera hora de la tarde, indica que la planta baja ha quedado totalmente destrozada y llena de escombros.
Por suerte, no hubo víctimas humanas. Sin embargo, llegados este punto cabe la necesidad de priorizar la estabilidad de la fauna marina sobre el atractivo que pueda generar la instalación de un acuario en un espacio, como el hotel en cuestión.

DISASTER AT BERLIN AQUARIUM
Last week, the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium in Berlin burst in the early hours of December 16 for reasons as yet unknown. The so-called AquaDom is located inside the downtown Radisson Collection Hotel in the German city.
This disaster resulted in the spillage of about one million liters of salt water and 1,500 tropical fish inside. In addition, two people were slightly injured due to cuts from the glass.
The aquarium was located in one of the most visited areas of the city, next to the Berlin Cathedral and the Museum Island. It was 16 meters high and 11.5 meters in diameter, arranged in a cylindrical shape and contained a transparent elevator in the middle.
When the structure broke and the water was released, it generated a torrent that damaged a large part of the hotel furniture and other stores on the first floor. The aquarium contained almost a hundred different tropical species and many of them have been found dead in the streets or have ended up dragged into the sewers. It is worth mentioning that the temperature inside the aquarium was kept at around 26 degrees and Berlin, in the early hours of December 16, recorded temperatures of minus nine degrees Celsius.
Firefighters, who immediately moved to the scene, confirmed that some fish could be saved, being transferred to other aquariums. As for the hotel, there was a power outage and the guests were moved to another hotel nearby. According to reports from the Fire Department, who was able to enter the space early in the afternoon, the ground floor was completely destroyed and full of debris.
Fortunately, there were no human casualties. However, at this point it is necessary to prioritize the stability of the marine fauna over the attractiveness of the installation of an aquarium in a space such as the hotel in question.
