ARCOmadrid es la Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de España. Se trata de una de las principales plataformas del mercado del arte contemporáneo. La edición de este año 2023, que corresponde con su 42ª edición, se ha celebrado del 22 al 26 de febrero en Ifema Madrid.
El programa de esta edición ha presentado como tema principal “El Mediterráneo: un Mar Redondo” y ha sido comisariado por Marina Fokidis, con la asesoría de Bouchra Khalili, Hila Peleg y Pedro G.
El título del tema pretende expresar a través de esta idea una serie de obras desmenuzadas. “Es redondo como también es la falda de un derviche, el giro repetido de una muñeca de una bailadora flamenca, la forma de danza tradicional griega, una cesta de fruta en un mercado, un salvavidas en medio del mar…” según la comisaria de la sección. Además, añade, que el trozo de mar representado es un círculo que no tiene línea base. “No tiene derecha ni izquierda ni abajo ni arriba. Gira. Todo lo que va, vuelve. Por lo tanto, es posible que exista una necesidad urgente de recuperar una conciencia más esférica de esta región tan particular, con su geografía móvil e inestable”.
El tema central, de esta manera, ha abarcado una selección de obras correspondientes a 19 artistas que engloban distintas formas creativas y discursivas.
Esta edición ha superado los 95.000 visitantes, volviendo a las cifras de prepandemia. Con todo ello, el resultado de ARCOmadrid este 2023 ha dejado conocer y admirar numerosos proyectos y entender que el Mar Mediterráneo, una vez más, es fuente de inspiración y creación para muchos artistas.

ARCOMADRID: THE MEDITERRANEAN: A ROUND SEA
ARCOmadrid is the International Contemporary Art Fair of Spain. It is one of the main platforms of the contemporary art market. This year’s edition 2023, which corresponds to its 42nd edition, was held from February 22 to 26 at Ifema Madrid.
The program of this edition has presented as its main theme “The Mediterranean: a Round Sea” and has been curated by Marina Fokidis, with the advice of Bouchra Khalili, Hila Peleg and Pedro G.
The title of the theme aims to express through this idea a series of crumbled works. “It is round as is also the skirt of a dervish, the repeated twist of a doll of a flamenco dancer, the traditional Greek dance form, a basket of fruit in a market, a life preserver in the middle of the sea…” according to the curator of the section. Moreover, she adds, that the piece of sea represented is a circle that has no baseline. “It has no right or left, no bottom or top. It turns. Everything that goes, comes back. So there may be an urgent need to recover a more spherical awareness of this very particular region, with its mobile and unstable geography.”
The central theme, in this way, has encompassed a selection of works corresponding to 19 artists that encompass different creative and discursive forms.
This edition has surpassed 95,000 visitors, returning to the pre-pandemic figures. All in all, the result of ARCOmadrid this 2023 has let us know and admire numerous projects and understand that the Mediterranean Sea, once again, is a source of inspiration and creation for many artists.
