El mar Mediterráneo ha sido siempre un espacio crucial para la navegación, el comercio y el intercambio cultural. Desde tiempos antiguos, las civilizaciones mediterráneas han dependido de los mapas para trazar rutas comerciales, planificar exploraciones y, sobre todo, comprender su entorno. La cartografía ha sido, por lo tanto, una herramienta fundamental para el desarrollo de esta región, conectando continentes, culturas y conocimientos.
Sin embargo, no todos los mapas que llegaron hasta nosotros son fieles reflejos de la realidad. Muchos de ellos contienen silencios, enigmas y, en algunos casos, desinformación intencionada o accidental. Este fenómeno nos invita a reflexionar sobre la confiabilidad de los mapas históricos y cómo han influido en la historia de los países mediterráneos.
Para profundizar en estos temas y descubrir más sobre los misterios de los mapas antiguos, les invitamos a asistir a la conferencia “Silencios, enigmas y desinformación en la cartografía histórica. ¿Fake maps?”, que tendrá lugar el miércoles 9 de abril a las 18:30 h, impartida por Francisco García, catedrático de Geofísica en la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) y director de la Fundación Giménez Lorente.
El evento se llevará a cabo en el Salón de Actos- ADE, ubicado en el Edificio 7J- 2ª Planta de la UPV, frente a la Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Geodésica, Cartográfica y Topográfica.

The Mediterranean Sea has always been a crucial space for navigation, trade and cultural exchange. Since ancient times, Mediterranean civilizations have relied on maps to chart trade routes, plan explorations and, above all, understand their environment. Cartography has therefore been a fundamental tool for the development of this region, connecting continents, cultures and knowledge.
However, not all the maps that have come down to us are faithful reflections of reality. Many of them contain silences, enigmas and, in some cases, intentional or accidental misinformation. This phenomenon invites us to reflect on the reliability of historical maps and how they have influenced the history of Mediterranean countries.

Fake maps?”, which will take place on Wednesday, April 9 at 18:30 h, given by Francisco García, Professor of Geophysics at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and director of the Giménez Lorente Foundation.
The event will take place in the Assembly Hall- ADE, located in Building 7J- 2nd Floor of the UPV, in front of the School of Geodetic, Cartographic and Topographic Engineering.
