En septiembre de 2015, la Asamblea General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) declaró el 11 de febrero como Día Internacional de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia. En este marco que pretende fomentar el conocimiento y la presencia del papel de la mujer en el progreso tecnológico y científico, nace “Oceánicas: la mujer y la oceanografía”. ndo el objetivo de divulgar el trabajo de científicas que han dedicado su vida al estudio de los océanos.
Este proyecto se encuentra en plena sintonía con el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible número 5: igualdad de género. Esta meta se abre paso en la Agenda 2030 planteada por la ONU con la finalidad de erradicar la desigualdad entre hombres y mujeres y fomentando la importancia de la participación equitativa de ambos géneros para alcanzar el bienestar social.
Una de las iniciativas de este proyecto ha sido el lanzamiento de su segunda edición, en 2022, de la publicación “Oceánicas: pioneras de la oceanografía”. El libro narra la vida y obra de veinte científicas marinas ilustres dedicadas a la exploración y conservación de los océanos. Este conjunto ilustrado de biografías fue publicado por la Editorial CSIC y desarrollado por el Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO, CSIC) con la colaboración de la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología – Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.
Se suma así, un proyecto de divulgación que expone el imprescindible papel de la mujer, silenciado a lo largo de la historia, para conocer y reflexionar sobre la necesidad de alcanzar la igualdad de género en toda su plenitud.

“OCEAN WOMEN: PIONEERS OCEANOGRAPHY”
In September 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) declared February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In this framework that aims to promote the knowledge and presence of the role of women in technological and scientific progress, “Oceánicas: la mujer y la oceanografía” (Oceanic: women and oceanography) was born. This project works in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), pursuing the goal of disseminating the work of women scientists who have dedicated their lives to the study of the oceans.
This project is fully in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5: gender equality. This goal makes its way into the 2030 Agenda set by the UN with the aim of eradicating inequality between men and women and promoting the importance of equal participation of both genders to achieve social welfare.
One of the initiatives of this project has been the launch of its second edition, in 2022, of the publication “Oceánicas: pioneras de la oceanografía”. The book chronicles the lives and work of twenty illustrious female marine scientists dedicated to the exploration and conservation of the oceans. This illustrated set of biographies was published by Editorial CSIC and developed by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, CSIC) with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science and Innovation.
This is an outreach project that exposes the essential role of women, silenced throughout history, to know and reflect on the need to achieve gender equality in all its fullness.
