Este 29 de septiembre se celebra el Día Marítimo Mundial bajo el lema “Nuevas tecnologías para un transporte marítimo más ecológico”. Este concepto se encuentra estrechamente relacionado con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU). En especial, el número 4 (educación de calidad), el 8 (trabajo decente), el 9 (innovación e industria) y el número 5 (igualdad de género), especialmente promocionado y necesario en el sector.
Los tratados internacionales que facilitan la mejora en la seguridad en el mar comenzaron a adoptarse en el siglo XIX. En 1948, en el marco de una conferencia internacional de las Naciones Unidas en Ginebra, se constituyó por convenio la Organización Marítima Internacional (OMI). Su función consiste en crear un marco de igualdad de condiciones a fin de que los armadores de buques dispongan de diversas maneras de solucionar sus problemas financieros que no presupongan la aplicación de recortes presupuestarios que comprometan la seguridad, la protección y el comportamiento ambiental.
En el día de hoy, cuya celebración se realizará de manera presencial en Sudáfrica, se pretende trasladar el concepto de sostenibilidad al tráfico marítimo, que permita compaginar las necesidades sociales con el bienestar de los mares, océanos y toda la vida que encierran.

WORLD MARITIME DAY
World Maritime Day is being celebrated this September 29th under the theme “New technologies for greener shipping”. This concept is closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). In particular, number 4 (quality education), number 8 (decent work), number 9 (innovation and industry) and number 5 (gender equality), especially promoted and needed in the sector.
International treaties facilitating the improvement of safety at sea began to be adopted in the 19th century. In 1948, at an international conference of the United Nations in Geneva, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was established by convention. Its role is to create a level playing field so that shipowners have a variety of ways to solve their financial problems that do not involve budget cuts that compromise safety, security and environmental performance.
Today’s event, which will be held in person in South Africa, aims to transfer the concept of sustainability to maritime traffic, making it possible to reconcile social needs with the well-being of the seas, oceans and all the life they contain.
