El 30 y el 31 de mayo se celebra el Día Marítimo Europeo. Esta efeméride tiene como objetivo dar visibilidad a la importancia del mar como fuente de recurso, así como, hacer especial hincapié en el impacto que tiene entre los ciudadanos europeos. Este Día se celebra desde el año 2008 en iniciativa entre el Consejo Europeo, el Parlamento Europeo y la Comisión Europea, como arte integrante de la política marítima de la Unión Europea.
Según la Agencia Europea de Medio Ambiente el transporte marítimo en Europa juega un papel crucial en el comercio y la economía del continente, moviendo aproximadamente el 77% del comercio exterior europeo y el 35% del comercio total en valor entre los Estados miembros de la UE. Este sector es esencial para la cadena de suministro global, a pesar de los desafíos ambientales significativos que enfrenta.
Además, se prevé que el sector marítimo continúe creciendo debido a la demanda de materias primas y el transporte de contenedores. Este crecimiento proyectado plantea retos adicionales en términos de sostenibilidad y mitigación de impactos ambientales. La UE ha implementado políticas para promover el uso de combustibles alternativos y tecnologías innovadoras para reducir la huella ambiental del sector.
En términos de sostenibilidad, se han adoptado medidas como el uso de combustibles alternativos, baterías y suministro eléctrico en puerto. Sin embargo, se requiere un esfuerzo mayor para alcanzar los objetivos de descarbonización y reducción de la contaminación establecidos por el Pacto Verde Europeo. La colaboración entre la Agencia Europea de Medio Ambiente y la Agencia Europea de Seguridad Marítima ha sido clave para evaluar y mejorar el conocimiento sobre los impactos medioambientales del transporte marítimo en Europa.

European Maritime Day is celebrated on May 30 and 31. This event aims to give visibility to the importance of the sea as a source of resources, as well as to emphasize the impact it has on European citizens. The Day has been celebrated since 2008 on the initiative of the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission, as an integral part of the European Union’s maritime policy.
According to the European Environment Agency, maritime transport in Europe plays a crucial role in the continent’s trade and economy, moving approximately 77% of European foreign trade and 35% of total trade in value between EU Member States. This sector is essential to the global supply chain, despite the significant environmental challenges it faces.
In addition, the maritime sector is expected to continue to grow due to demand for raw materials and container shipping. This projected growth poses additional challenges in terms of sustainability and mitigation of environmental impacts. The EU has implemented policies to promote the use of alternative fuels and innovative technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of the sector.
In terms of sustainability, measures such as the use of alternative fuels, batteries and shore-side electricity supply have been adopted. However, further efforts are required to achieve the decarbonization and pollution reduction targets set by the European Green Pact. Collaboration between the European Environment Agency and the European Maritime Safety Agency has been key to assessing and improving knowledge about the environmental impacts of shipping in Europe.
